The Note
This isn't the first time in the 16 years I've been writing The Note that I've procrastinated and made the occasional slightly nervous glance at my calendar of deadlines. Lately, it's seemed to me that I can't write about the most significant things that are going on in the world, and it feels strange to me to write about the not-so-significant things. I say that with respect to people who write for the New York Daily News. People gotta make a living. And, where else are you going to learn this?
The comedian and TV writer who posted about the alleged shrimp tails he found in his Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal is married to Danielle Fishel, who played Topanga on 'Boy Meets World,' and the internet is going bonkers while everyone awaits lab results.
After I compile an issue of this journal, it's my habit to read it through and look for a title or a word or phrase in a poem or story that ... I don't know ... does something to make me know to use it as the title of an issue.
Here is a sample of issue titles:
prime number
jewels of sanity
fish shadows
the sky has your number
the radius of salvation
a field keeps its secrets
this is our world now
So this is our world now. I'm grateful to people who can make art about war, pandemic, and a slow-rolling movement away from liberal democracy. (Maybe not so slow.)
Thanks to Don Thompson, whose poem is the last one in this issue and which contributes the title of this issue: holding on to each other.
Enjoy the issue! Thanks to all contributors and editors!
